| With the declaration of independence in 1991 Ukraine became
a sovereign state. This brought with it some exciting new options for members of the Ukrainian Diaspora all over
the world. Here in South Australia one of those options that created intense interest was the possibility of establishing
new trade and business contacts with the young state. At about the same time the South Australian Government began promoting trade between South Australia and a variety of overseas countries, specifically those from which ethnic groupings already existed in this state. Many national groups took advantage of this new climate and began to develop ethnic chambers of commerce. A group of business and professional people from the Ukrainian Community determined that a Ukrainian Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry would be of benefit both to Ukraine and South Australia. In 1992 a steering committee was formed with the aim of creating such a chamber. It was comprised of a cross section of business and professional people with Ms Slawka Bell as the head. The steering committee met on a regular basis to develop the aims and directions of the chamber. A constitution was drawn together, a logo created and potential members were canvassed. The steering committee met at the business premises of Chris and Slawka Bell who provided a valuable impetus to the new body. The main efforts of the committee were to work towards an official launch of the chamber and its first AGM. The launch, held in April 1993, proved to be an auspicious occasion with the keynote address and official opening performed by the then premier of South Australia the Hon. Lyn Arnold MP. The inaugural AGM was subsequently held with Ms Slawka Bell being elected as the first President of the Ukrainian Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UACCI). The UACCI is now one of the founding chambers of CITCSA (Council for International Trade and Commerce S.A.) where it holds regular monthly meetings. Over the past seven years UACCI has been host to a number of visiting Ukrainian business groups and has held seminars and information evenings on a variety of business related topics. There have been moves made to establish business contacts in Ukraine and there are representatives of the Chamber in a number of major cities in Ukraine. The Chamber also provides information to local business people wishing to do business in Ukraine and vice versa. |
